One Art
By: Elizabeth Bishop
The art of losing isn’t hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.
Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.
Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.
I lost my mother’s watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.
I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn’t a disaster.
—Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan’t have lied. It’s evident
the art of losing’s not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.
I'm not much for poetry. I love literature and reading, however poetry has never been something that I was extremely excited about. I had to take many classes and nothing ever really clicked, well except for this particular poem. I read it back in high school and again in a few classes in college. Whenever I am having an off day, week or heck even month this poem is the one thing I like to go back, read and re-read as many times as necessary {of course a glass of wine, or you know three are consumed to help with the process but that is neither here nor there}. I can't even explain why this poem just calms me so much. Weird, maybe, I don't know... All I can say is that I hope by sharing it, you too can find some peace in it.
What are your methods for dealing with stress or having a bad day?!

I love poetry! I have taken classes on poetry, reading poetry, writing poetry, and even history of poetry. I guess I like all things involving words. Thanks for sharing!
